The Dots Image Generator is an online image effect tool that transforms standard digital photos into stylized halftone or stipple art. By analyzing the luminance of the original image, it maps brightness values to varying dot sizes and customizable shapes, recreating classic print aesthetics entirely within your web browser.
100% Local Client-Side Processing: Rendering is powered by HTML5 Canvas on your device. Your images are never uploaded to external servers, ensuring strict data privacy.
Multiple Dot Shapes: Generate artwork using various geometric matrix patterns including Circles, Triangles, Hearts, Stars, and Sparkles.
Real-Time Parameter Control: Instantly adjust grid density (Dots), minimum/maximum dot sizes, contrast, and lightness with live visual feedback.
Custom Color Mapping: Define specific dot colors and background hues via hex codes to match any specific design palette.
High-Resolution Export: Download your generated dot art without quality loss in PNG, JPG, JPEG, or WebP formats.
Choose Image: Drag and drop your image into the workspace or click to select a file from your local drive.
Configure Matrix & Shapes:
Dots (Grid): Determines the density of the dot matrix. Higher values create finer details, while lower values produce a bold, abstract pop-art look.
Dots Shape: Select your preferred geometry (e.g., Circle, Star, Heart).
Min / Max Size: Controls the scaling boundaries of the dots.
Adjust Tone:
Lightness & Contrast: Refine the image exposure. Higher contrast creates sharper distinctions between large (dark) and small (light) dots.
Invert: Reverses the luminance mapping, making dark areas appear as small dots and light areas as large dots.
Export & Download: Click your preferred format button (PNG, WebP, etc.) at the bottom to download the final graphic directly to your device.
The dot generation process relies on a technique called luminance mapping, which simulates the traditional halftone printing process. In halftone printing, continuous tone imagery (like photographs) is reproduced using only a single ink color printed as dots of varying sizes or spacing.
This generator mathematically scans the brightness (luminance) of the source photo pixel by pixel. Darker regions trigger the rendering of larger, denser shapes, while lighter regions produce microscopic shapes or empty space. This optical illusion tricks the human eye into perceiving smooth gradients, shadows, and continuous visual details.
Q: Are my personal images safe when using this tool?
A: Yes. The generator operates entirely locally via client-side JavaScript. Your photos are dynamically processed on your machine and are never transmitted over the internet.
Q: Why does my generated image look like a solid block of color?
A: This usually occurs if the original image is too dark or lacks contrast. Increase the "Contrast" slider or adjust the "Lightness" to allow the algorithm to distinguish between tonal ranges and render appropriately sized dots.
